Negotiations = Negoziazioni

SAMPLE DIALOGS
Dialog 1
TOM: It’s going to be hard to seal this deal.
JIM: Yeah, we’re not playing on our own turf, are we?
TOM: No we’re definitely on their ground.
JIM: What can we do to break the deadlock?
TOM: I suggest we give them an ultimatum. We can’t keep haggling forever, we have a plane to catch, after all.
JIM: So should we make them a final offer and hope for the best?
TOM: I think that’s the smartest idea, yeah.
Dialog 2
TOM: Please correct me if I’m wrong, but this contract only includes a limited liability clause, right?
JIM: That’s right.
TOM: Could you please clarify the reasoning behind that?
JIM: Sure, we pledge to be held accountable for anything that goes wrong which we could have prevented. But, for instance, in the event of force majeure, we cannot promise to rectify the damages.
TOM: I’m a little uneasy with that. How are we to know you won’t claim force majeure in circumstances which you could control?
JIM: I’m afraid you’ll just have to take our word. After all, our word counts for something in this industry.
Dialog 3
TOM: Do you think the provisions of this agreement will ensure that we can expect better working conditions?
JIM: Absolutely. It’s written down black on white, as clear as the day is long, exactly what to expect.
TOM: I see that, and it’s one of the bargaining points that I particularly like.
JIM: We did our best to draft a version that would meet your expectations.
TOM: Well you’ve succeeded. Where do I sign?
JIM: As it says in the contract, the agreement will be issued in 4 identical copies, so you need to sign all 4 and include your company’s stamp on 2 of them.
TOM: Well here you go!
JIM: Pleasure doing business with you!
Dialog 4
TOM: We’ll give you a 20% discount if you order over 30,000 units.
JIM: That’s an impressive offer.
TOM: It’s the best we can do.
JIM: What about an early payment discount or a cash payment.
TOM: Yes, I suppose if you pay in cash we could do an extra 5%.
JIM: Your offer is very tempting, Mr. Jereb.
TOM: We’re at bottom line, here, Mr. Williams.
JIM: I see that. Well, what can I say, a deal’s a deal!
Dialog 5
TOM: Providing that you lower the cost by an additional 10%, we would consider doing business with you.
JIM: An additional 10%?
TOM: Yes, that is our final offer.
JIM: I’m afraid that won’t be possible.
TOM: We’re happy to take our business elsewhere.
JIM: Don’t be so hasty, I’m sure we can come to some sort of an agreement.
TOM: Not until you lower your prices.
JIM: I think you’re bluffing, I don’t think you have another partner lined up.
TOM: Oh yeah, well try and call our bluff then.
JIM: Aha, maybe you are serious after all…
Dialog 6
Frank: Hello. This is Frank Stone calling from ENT Limited. We’ve gone through your price list and are interested if there is any possibility of a quantity discount.
Jim: It depends on the number of products that are we talking about.
Frank: Well, something in the ballpark of 540.
Jim: All right. I see. Provided you place an order for over 600 products, we can offer a 10% discount off our list price.
Frank: OK. And what kind of discount can we obtain on 540?
Jim: In all probability only around 5%. However, we can toss in another 3% discount if you pay in advance.
Frank: Truth be told, that’s a bit below our expectations… We are considering other suppliers as well.
Jim: Yes, price competition is quite fierce these days. But I’ll tell you what, you definitely won’t come across quality standards better than ours.
Frank: Would signing a letter of intent to use you as the supplier for our subsequent project lower the price any further?
Jim: I would have to think that over and talk it out with my team. I’ll let you know by tomorrow.
Frank: Thank you. Goodbye.
Jim: You’re welcome. Goodbye.
Dialog 7
Frank: Hi Jim. I just wanted to check if there is any possibility for a discount for our prompt payment?
Jim: I’d have to check with my boss.
Frank: Our business is growing pretty quickly and we’ll surely be throwing more business your way if you can offer us reasonable prices.
Jim: I see. I will call you back by tomorrow.
Frank: Thank you very much.
Dialog 8
Tim: Could you possibly tell me how much this motorbike costs?
Sam: How much are you prepared to pay?
Tim: I haven’t thought about it.
BRET: Well, taking into account costs like license, tax, and registration, I can give you this motorbike for three thousand euros.
Tim: Well, the figure I had in mind was a bit lower.
BRET: I guess I can go a bit lower. Would two thousand nine hundred go?
Tim: I was thinking more like two thousand and five hundred.
BRET: OK, my final offer is two thousand and six hundred.
Tim: It’s a deal.
