Past Tense Continuous
- John was cleaning the bedroom this morning. = John puliva la sua camera questa mattina.
- Judy was watching a film.
- John cleaned the bedroom this morning. =John ha pulito la camera questa mattina.
- Judy watched a film.
- Suzy was cleaning while James was having a shower.
- While we were watching a documentary, the earth shook.
Past Continuous: were watching a documentary
Past Simple: the earth shook
- Sarah was always forgetting things.
Simple Past:
Sarah always forgot things.
2) FORMA
La forma appropriata del verbo to be nel passato (was, were) + infinito + suffisso “-ing”
was: con I/he/she/it
were: con we/you/they
3) FORME AFFERMATIVE/NEGATIVE/INTERROGATIVE
+
I/he/she/it was eating breakfast.
We/you/they were eating breakfast.
In questo caso non esistono forme contratte.
–
I/he/she/it was not eating breakfast.
We/you/they were not eating breakfast.
I/he/she/it wasn’t eating breakfast.
We/you/they weren’t eating breakfast.
?
Il verbo ausiliare (was/were è anteposto al soggetto), quindi l’ordine sarebbe verbo ausiliare – soggetto – verbo con il significato pieno – resto della frase:
Was I/he/she/it eating breakfast?
Were we/you/they eating breakfast?
4) ESEMPI DI AVVERBI
While (in italiano “mentre”; in questa parte della frase solitamente abbiamo il Past Continuous, perché già while ci dice che qualcosa è durato più a lungo):
- While Tim was walking down the street, he met his neighbour.
was walking: azione durativa
met: azione temporanea
- While he was cooking, she was cleaning.
was cooking: azione durativa
was cleaning: azione durativa
- I was walking home when it started snowing.
was walking: azione durativa
started: azione temporanea
- From 5 to 6 o’clock (avverbio di tempo, che da solo suggerisce che l’azione dura più a lungo):
- I was playing football from eight to nine in the morning.
